Opening batsman Jake Hooson set a new club record for Pennine League leaders Walsden yesterday.

Hooson made 141 not out in a 159-run home win over Glodwick, the highest score by an amateur at the Scott Street club.

Sri Lankan Umesh Karunaratne crashed 102 off 47 balls before being bowled by the final delivery of the 50th over.

The pair added 180 and helped Walsden amass 337 for three.

Attacking spearhead Jamie Shackleton then took four for 42 to leave the visitors with an almost impossible task and Nick Barker took two wickets in an over to finish them off for 178.

Zimbabwean Gary Chiurimuuta hit 124 not out as Barkisland won by 48 runs at Skelmanthorpe in the Huddersfield League’s top section.

The Harare-born player received good backing from Luke Bridges (59) as the visitors racked up 268 for seven.

That proved out of reach of the home side thanks to Alex Scholefield taking four wickets against his former club and spinner Matthew Steers three.

Elland were out-gunned by visitors Delph and Dobcross, for whom Andy Gleeve hit 107 in a total of 270 for four.

Jacob Bower took two of the wickets and followed up with Elland’s top score of 37, batting at seven, as Muhammad Shakir (five for 35) helped limit the Hullen Edge men to 127.

Josh Wheatley enjoyed his return to Wakefield Road as lowly Pudsey Congs registered an easy eight-wicket win over Lightcliffe in the Bradford League’s Premier Division.

The off spinner took five for 39 to limit the hosts to 189 for nine and he followed up with 62 not out as Congs knocked off the runs inside 28 overs.

Wheatley batted steadily while Callum Geldart (56) and Andrew Bairstow (61 no) set about the home attack.

Skipper Alex Stead made 42 for Lightcliffe but was left to reflect on a below-par show by his side.

The Russell Way men must have been very hopeful at tea after Danyaal Ahmed (five for 35) and Sunny Matharu (three for 47) had dismissed Bankfoot for 156. Ex-Jer Lane player Raqeeb Younas scored 39 for the visitors.

However, the home batting failed again as Brighouse were all out for 129 with Wajid Hussain’s 24 the top score.

Northowram Fields retained second place in the Conference with a 68-run win over Wakefield St Michael’s.

Opener Ben Grech made 83 and received good backing from Chris Metcalf (42) and Majid Jahangir (39) as the Rams posted a useful 259 for eight.

The unheralded Jonathan Lee then took five for 52, aided by some smart work form Metcalf behind the stumps, as Saints were dismissed for 191.

Illingworth suffered a third consecutive defeat when they lost by four wickets at Knaresborough in the Aire/Wharfe League’s middle section.

The hosts elected to bowl and reduced Illingworth to 43 for three. The returning Matthew Smith (50) and James Lawton (24) added 74 but three wickets fell for just six runs and Illingworth were grateful to Adam Mellor (20) and then Ben Robertshaw (45) for lifting the total to 203 all out.

Knaresborough got off to a flyer, with Tom Beasley hitting eight boundaries in the first five overs before Daniel Murfet spun a ball past him for Jonny Lamb to complete the stumping.
