In a thrilling programme of a cappella choral music, Hebden Bridge-based choir The Hepton Singers will perform a programme of music about the many forms that love can take at Heptonstall Parish Church this Saturday (July 16 at 7.30pm).
It could be the love of a soldier for his monarch and people’s love of a soldier; divine love for us and our love of the divine; desire between lovers; and our love for children and our collective joy at the birth of a new infant.
The concert will include music by Benjamin Britten, William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Howard Skempton, Peter Maxwell Davies, and Heptonstall-based composer Katie Chatburn.
The centrepiece of the concert will be A Farewell to Arms by Richard Rodney Bennett, accompanied by cello solo from Heather Broadbent.
Director Alison West says: ‘The dramatic piece, based on two ancient poems, tells of weapons and armour becoming nothing but trivial domestic objects in times of peace - and of a knight’s enduring love for his sovereign, even when he no longer has the strength to fight.
Tickets are £9 (£6 concessions and £1 for U18s) on the door.
