Winston’s to find new lines from published text is under way!

Hebden Bridge based poet Winston Plowes is spending April as one of 78 poets from seven countries taking part in an initiaitve for U.S. Poetry Month.

Having been selected by the Oulipost project, co-ordinated by the Found Poetry Review, it unites authors in applying the constrained writing techniques of the Oulipo group to text found in local newspapers.

Winston is using The Hebden Bridge Times, Todmorden News, Brighouse Echo and Halifax Courier as his main source texts for part of the project, supplemented by an online publication.

We will be publishing examples of Winston’s work through the month.

For his first challenge of the month, printed below, he used material from the Hebden Bridge Times and Todmorden News, using as his source an advertisement from hair specialists Stone Hair Art, of Todmorden, and re-ordering it into a new work.

The Oulipost prompt was to select a text fragment from the chosen newspaper, replacing each meaningful word in the text (verb, noun, adjective or adverb) by its dictionary definition.

You can read the poem below to see just how Winston fared.
