Celebrating those everyday things in Roo’s exhibition

Hebden Bridge artist Roo S. Waterhouse is holding an exhibition of paintings at Hebden Bridge Town Hall, entitled The Comfort of Things.

Roo’s oil paintings - some small, some large scale - contemplate our relationships with our everyday surroundings and the objects within them: books; kitchen utensils; household cupboards and armchairs are all celebrated in paint.

Roo’s latest painting, ‘Compartmentalisation’, shows a magnified aerial view of the contents of a desk drawer, with bits and bobs carefully ordered into boxes: paperclips; drawing pins; old keys; labels; rubber bands - all carefully, lovingly depicted on this large canvas.

In her smaller works Roo focuses on people’s attachment to books.

She invites people to celebrate the books that have made a difference in their lives by commissioning their own ‘Shelfie’ painting – a truly original gift.

“I am especially enamoured with the way that we all bring our own stories to the reading of a book, and all take different memories away,” said Roo.

The exhibition runs at Hebden Bridge Town Hall from Tuesday, April 15, until Sunday, May 18, opening from 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and 10am to 3pm on Saturdays. The café is open daily until 3pm.

Roo will be holding a ‘Meet the Artist’ afternoon on Saturday, May 3, from noon to 2pm. More details at www.roowaterhouse.co.uk
