On a day when it was difficult to stand up, let alone play golf, remarkably 26 ‘certifiable’ Mount Skip golfers decided to take on the elements in the winter league last Sunday.
The biggest win of the day was by Mark Wade and Steve Scholes, who made light work of the conditions and Ash Hewitt and Dave Pickles, winning 7&5.
This group was in the club house more than an hour before the two-ball, in which Michael Turner took low handicapper Martyn to the last before losing two down.
Martin Whiley and young Harry Wade also went to the final hole, eventually beating Darren Clithero and Mick Robertson.
Top Skip golfer George Bamford, whose Sunday morning football match was off, made a rare winter league appearance. ‘Bamf’ partnered Rob Dutson and they had a 4&3 win against Colin Greenwood and Matthew Richards.
Because of the weather Noel Russell took a lot of persuading to actually play. However, he again played superbly and he and Charles Bamford managed a 2&1 win over last year’s winner Jonny Cockroft and Terry Clancey.
Sam Scholes kept his challenge for the top spot alive with a 2&1 win partnering Andy Hutchinson against Lee Amos and Paul Elliot.
Current leader Gav Brumby and Matthew Fisher had a comfortable 3&1 win over Gavin Degnan and Des Senior. Des is a fair weather golfer but obviously wanted some practice before his forthcoming golf trip to sunny Spain later in the month.
He remarked in the clubhouse that this was winter golf at its very worst and it wouldn’t ever happen again. How often have we heard that!
