Mytholmroyd seconds are hoping that the league might provide a surprise silver lining to their season after they were well beaten in last Sunday’s Crossley Shield final.
Tom Russell’s side lost by 99 runs at Old Crossleyans’ Broomfield ground after favourites and Foster’s Halifax League title favourites Warley bowled them out for 69.
Russell was far from disappointed after a great run in the competition, which included wins over three Premier sides.
He is also hoping Mytholmroyd can grab a place in the top flight for 2015, in spite of a two-wicket defeat on Saturday to the cup final hosts.
The damage was minimal, with other sides immediately below runaway winners Southowram also losing, and ‘Royd are only five points behind second-placed Low Moor with four games left.
Russell said: “The other results went our way on Saturday and we are hoping we can climb into the Premier.
“We have been rebuilding after being in a poor state three years ago and the club is a happy place.”
Mytholmroyd had no answer to Warley’s experienced opening bowlers Craig Brennan (five for 19) and Rob Keywood (two for 15) on Sunday with Sam Walker (17) and Dan Murgatroyd (10) the only batsmen to make double figures.
That came after a good fightback in the field from ‘Royd, who mopped up the last eight wickets for 34 runs after Ryan Severn (60) and Andrew Oates (40) appeared to have set up Warley for a big score.
Slow bowlers Dan Murgatroyd (three for 13) and Russell’s father Jon (three for 32) helped give the underdogs a fighting chance, only for Royd’s batsmen to fail.
Tom Russell added: “We were happy to be there and had a good day. We probably celebrated more than they did.
“We had our time in the game - a good spell of between one and one and half hours when we were on the up.”
Russell said Spencer Harris and Walker had bowled too short and been punished on a blustery day with several stoppages for rain.
Brennan and Keywood had later shown his quicker bowlers where to pitch the ball.
