Albatross helps Nest pair to victory

A rare nett albatross helped Crow Nest Park’s Gareth Evans and Richard Langley-Webb (9) win yesterday’s final Halifax-Huddersfield Alliance meeting of the season at Outlane.

Only seven professionals took part in a field of 30 pairs for an event which was re-arranged after being abandoned due to heavy rain in March.

Evans and Langley-Webb had the best score of the day, 44 points, in the pro-am section after some heroics from Langley-Webb on the par five 12th hole.

Langley-Webb chipped in with his second and also received a shot to make it a very rare five-pointer,

That enabled him and his partner to edge out Tom Wild and Gary Ward (8) of Bradley Park by one point.

Ward had a nett eagle on the par four second and Enzo Sechi matched that on the 10th on his home course.

In the am-am section, a score of 42 was good enough for Bradley Park’s Dave Mitcheson (13) and Outlane’s Peter Ford (18) to take the honours.

There was a three way tie for second, resolved on back nine count-back in favour of Steve Hopkinson (6) and Alliance president Mick Appleyard (7) of Bradley Hall.

Nett eagles were achieved by Crow Nest Park’s Mark Campbell, Outlane trio Lenny Campey, Dave Knapton and John Lawton and Bradley Hall’s John Morris.

It was a bright, sunny day with occasional cloud and a cool breeze. The course was dry and the greens good but not yet perfect. There was plenty of grass on the fairways and the rough was very lush and resistant.

While Evans was the leading points scorer for the winter season on 64, he is a tour pro and ineligible for the professional order of merit.

That went to long-serving and popular Dewsbury player Nigel Hirst on 57 points from Tom Wild on 44.

Dewsbury was the champion club with 409 points from Crosland Heath on 405 and Bradley Hall on 402.
