Shelf FC maintain title hopes

Shelf FC maintained their distant pursuit of Ryburn United in the Haslem-Sheppard Halifax AFL title race with a 7-3 win away to Hebden Royd Red Star last night.

They climbed to second in the table, still 16 points behind Ryburn with seven games left compared to the leaders’ one.

Callum Lewis capped a man of the match display with another two goals and Josh Hans, Jack Hartley, Matthew Hartley, Alex O’Keefe and substitute Ben Ireland were also on target for the visitors at Mytholmroyd.

Shelf’s next two fixtures, on Saturday and Wednesday, are against a Midgley United side who were beaten 1-0 away to Sowerby Bridge last night.

Bridge went fourth and can still match Ryburn’s current points total but two cup final appearances look the more likely source or silverware.

Third-from-bottom Sowerby United inched a little closer to safety with a 2-2 home draw against Greetland, leading scorer Rory Thickett moving on to 13 goals for the season with two more.

Runaway Division One champions Denholme United extinguished Salem’s slim promotion hopes with a 6-2 home win.

Elland Allstars drew 2-2 with Illingworth St Mary’s Reserves and Ivy House won 3-2 away to Ryburn United Reserves in last night’s other matches in the section.
