Saints go marching on

Illingworth St Mary's took another step towards the Haslem-Sheppard Halifax AFL's middle-section title when evening fixtures started last night.

The leaders won 3-1 away to third-placed Sowerby United at Ryburn Valley High School to make it 18 wins out of 18 in the league this season.

Saints had the boost of a goal in the first five minutes from Phil Livesey and a horrendous own goal, when the Sowerby centre back’s back pass beat his own keeper, made it 2-0 at the break.

Josh Hiley got Sowerby back in the contest and they missed some good chances in the second half, Livesey’s second making the points safe for the visitors.

Second-placed Brighouse Sports won with the only goal of the game away to Elland Allstars, from James Speak, and stay nine points behind Illingworth from one game fewer.

Sowerby’s hopes of catching Brighouse for the runners-up berth look slim and it looks as if they must win Saturday’s clash between the pair to have a chance.

Four goals from Michael Midgley helped fourth-placed Denholme United maintain their impressive form in a 7-2 home success against AFC Crossleys.

Kris Charnock got the only goal of the game as Sowerby Bridge won away to Midgley United Reserves.

Calder ‘76 Reserves picked up only a fourth league win of the season by 2-1 at home to Salem.
