Premier Division clubs progress in Sunday Cup

Clifton took the lead before Mohammad Ozair hit a powerful long range shot which the away keeper couldn’t keep it out to equalise.

Clifton again took the lead through run of the play before Hammers levelled again through Lamin Jannah.

Mohammad Ozair’s penalty handed the hosts the lead, which was extended after the interval by substitute Awais Khan with a good solo goal.

Clifton scored again to make it 4-3 but another Hammers substitute Terriq Pervez finally put the result beyond doubt.

First Division table-toppers Lee Mount put in their best performance of the season against a highly rated Thornbury Celtic of the Bradford Alliance Premier League, beating them 2-1 at Myra Shay in the County Sunday Cup.

Lee Mount were down to 10 men after 20 minutes with Danny Hildred being sent off for dissent.

Mount battled hard and their persistence paid off when some fine play from Jordan Heath sent Callum Meade through, and he made no mistake giving the visitors the lead.

Some fine goalkeeping from stand-in Shane Kelly kept Celtic at bay.

More fine play from Jordan Heath and Ryder then set Meade up for his second before half time.

Thornbury were awarded a hotly-disputed penalty which was brilliantly saved by Kelly, but did pull a goal back with five minutes to go through a Fiander own goal.

In an all First Division clash, Carrington won 5-2 at Barge, while fellow First Division side Feathers won 8-1 at K Town United.

First Division Ryburn Valley progressed with a home walkover against Ovenden BCFC, but Division Two sides Fountain Head and Halifax Amateur both crashed out, losing 7-1 and 5-0 to JB Celtic and Ventus United respectively.

First Division Old Pond secured a dramatic progression through to round three of The West Riding County FA Sunday Trophy, squandering a two goal lead before eventually winning on penalties away at Wrenthorpe Rangers.

The Hove Edge side were comfortably on top throughout the first half; a Hayden Lewis cross was almost flicked home by Sean Suttle, before Paul Taylor was thwarted by Freddie Openshaw in the Rangers net.

Steve Galloway had a good headed opportunity before the deadlock was broken on 14 minutes; Michael Barlow saw his initial effort blocked but Lewis was on hand to ram home the follow up.

It took just four minutes for Pond to double their advantage; a great Galloway through ball was latched upon by Lewis and after a number of ricochets in the penalty area the ball fell for Taylor to fire home his 14th of the season.

The home side saw little in the way of attack in the first half, but Wayne Allert made a superb challenge to deny a rare Wrenthorpe foray, whilst Kristian Ellis was sweeping up any long range efforts in the Pond net.

A superb move late in the half could have put Pond out of sight, but a terrific effort from Suttle smashed back off the crossbar.

The second half saw the home side storm back into the match, with Pond having taken their foot off the gas. They got one back with a set piece which evaded everyone, before substitute Adil Ali bundled home at the back post to equalise.

Both sides defended staunchly to take the tie to penalties, with Andy Marshall, Richard Dawson, Allert and Suttle all putting their bodies on the line at times; whilst Jamie O’Callaghan had to play out the last twenty minutes with a hamstring injury.

Player-manager Dawson made the difficult shout to take Ellis out of goals and put the taller Allert in for the spot kicks, but both players were still able to make their mark.

Jamie Horsley, Lewis, Taylor and Barlow had all scored when the shoot-out went to sudden death. Ellis stepped up and calmly struck what turned out to be the winning kick, leaving Allert to step up to the fore and save smartly to put his side through.

In the only Ziggys Metro Cars Halifax Sunday League Premier Division game of the day, Mount Tabor drew 3-3 at Queens Head.

In the only First Division clash of the day, Beehive and Crosskeys won 5-2 at King Cross Park.

In Division Two of The Ziggys Metro Cars Halifax Sunday League, North Bridge saw their recent upturn in form dented against an Ovenden Phoenix side picking up only their second win of the campaign.

Brandon Wilkinson (2), Ryan Crossley and Travis Allinson were amongst the goalscorers for Ovenden in a 5-1 win as they pulled clear of bottom side Halifax Rangers Reserves and are now just a point behind Bradshaw.

Elsewhere in Division Two, Triangle beat Bradshaw 3-2.
