Ovenden West Riding, probably Calderdale’s most successful amateur football team in recent times, have withdrawn their reserve team from Division Two of the West Riding County Amateur League.
Philip Rhodes, the league secretary, said today he had received an email from the club’s long-serving secretary and former manager Steve Smith.
It informed the league that Ovenden would be withdrawing their second string with immediate effect due to a lack of players.
Ovenden Reserves played home games at Shroggs Park, Lee Mount and have had success in their league cup in the past.
They have struggled this season, picking up only one point in seven league outings. They lost 2-1 away to Salts Reserves last Saturday.
Ovenden’s first team, based at Natty Lane, Illingworth, have had numerous trophy successes in recent years and are the Halifax FA Saturday Cup holders.
Since the end of last season the West Riding County Amateur League had previously lost Bay Athletic, Bay Athletic Reserves, Storthes Hall, Storthes Hall Reserves, Gildersome Spurs OB, The Hunslet & Parkside Club, Tyersal Reserves and Thornes FC.
