Ferrybridge next for Hollins

The remarkable run of Joel Booth’s side continued with a 2-0 win away to Sky Bet last Sunday in a much-delayed tie.

Goals from Tom Garland after 15 minutes and Ryan Jeffreys after 70 minutes did the trick for the visitors in Leeds.

Hollins produced one of their best performances in recent times and could have Steve Senior, James Chadwick and George Bamford back in contention for the last eight game.

Looking back on last weekend, Booth said Sky Bet’s pitch at Weetwood Hall in Leeds had been excellent and he could understand why it had been protected on previous wet Sundays.

“They were a decent side but perhaps not physically strong enough. I thought we played the better football,” he said.

Four games took place in the Halifax Sunday League’s top flight and they were won by the teams now occupying the top four places - Carrington, Bowling Green, Waiters Arms and Halifax Hammers.

Carrington beat Old Pond 3-0 - almost a moral victory for the home time after conceding 11 goals and then six to the champions in previous meetings this season!

Pond must have feared the worst with only 11 players, including veteran club secretary Andy Dawson and injured striker Wayne Allert, who went in goal with regular ‘keeper Dan Barnes up front.

The first half was goalless with Allert in fine form as Carrington were the dominant attacking force throughout.

The pressure told at the start of the second half when Jordan Coduri made the breakthrough and Carrington put the game to bed in the last 10 minutes via Damian Randall’s sweet strike and Josh Hiley.

Bowling Green remain five points behind Carrington, from two games more, after a 5-1 success over Top Club.

Waiters Arms completed a treble of wins this season over one-time bogey side Lee Mount with a 2-1 victory at Shroggs Park.

Both teams struggled to keep the ball in the early stages on a very uneven surface but Waiters dominated the chances. Lee Wood and David Chappell missed sitters before Mount ‘keeper Shaun Baxter denied Wood and James Waggett.

Waiters finally broke the deadlock after half an hour when Carl Maguire was hacked down and got up to score from the spot.

Chappell rifled home on the volley from an acute angle after a great pass from Marco Romano and Kev Talbot hit the bar from close in.

Lee Mount were fired up for the second half with Jordan Pettifor impressing and he pulled a goal back with a smart lob over Ethan Daly.

Daly then pulled off a superb save to deny Rohan Ford before Waiters settled back down and could have added to their tally late on.

Halifax Hammers, playing catch up with their league fixtures after also enjoying a fine county cup run, were 4-1 winners at Ryburn United.

They started brightly and deservedly took the lead after 11 minutes, Awais Khan setting up Junaid Ali to score from close range.

Ryburn’s best chances came at set pieces but they fell further behind on 34 minutes when fine one touch passing by Kashif Akmal and Ahsan Farooq put Lamin Gitteh in the clear and he smashed the ball home.

Great passing on the left by Jasim Saleh and Khan set up Gitteh to round Ryburn ‘keeper Scott Lewis and make it 3-0 at half time.

Hammers kept the ball well in the second half but Macaulay Peacock got Ryburn back in the game on 70 minutes after Hammers ‘keeper Bilal Sheraz had been caught in two minds.

Luke Hartley was denied a second for Ryburn when Ikhlaq Ahmed brilliantly cleared off the line.

Hammers sealed victory in a match well refereed by Mick Denton when Irfan Afzal’s mazy run put Sameer Ahmed clear and he hit an unstoppable shot.

Feathers took advantage of Barge’s inactivity to go 13 points clear in Division One with a 5-0 win over North Bridge.

Beehive and Crosskeys looked anything but promotion contenders in a 7-1 defeat to Oddfellows.

Bradshaw beat Fountain Head 7-5 in the big game at the bottom and Royd Club slipped to the foot of the table with a 4-1 loss against Ovenden BCFC.

Fellow strugglers Triangle lost 2-0 to mid-table Ryburn Valley.

King Cross Park took another stride towards the Division Two title with a 3-0 win over Halifax Amateurs.

Weavers beat St Columbas 2-0 in the section’s other game.
