Quick wins for Illingworth and Rams

Illingworth and Northowram Fields both blew away their opponents with the ball to maintain their encouraging starts to the season yesterday.

Illingworth shattered hosts Menston for 38 en route to an eight-wicket win in Division Three of the Aire/Wharfe League while Northowram dismissed visitors Oulton for 67 in the Central Yorkshire League’s Championship Division and went on to win by seven wickets.

Winning the toss helped, after plenty of rain earlier in the week, and Illingworth and Northowram both elected to field.

Jamie Moorhouse (seven for 16) and Liam Kelly (three for 20) tore through the Menston ranks in 18 overs. The home side reached 36 and then lost their last five wickets for the addition of one more run.

Illingworth openers James Whiteley (16) and Alex Ledger (18 no) looked as though they would finish the job but two wickets went down on 36 before Ben Robertshaw hit a clinching boundary.

Northowram Fields, relegated from the top flight last season, have won their last four completed matches.

Oulton had no answer to the pace of Josh Benntt-Keer (five for 25) and accuracy of Zafar Khan (four for 34), a run out accounting for the 10th wicket.

Oulton were eight for four before stands of 36 and 23. The last four wickets fell with the score on 67.

Dru Patel (23 no) and Ben Grech (14 no) completed victory to keep spirits high prior to today’s home cup game with Carlton.

Todmorden picked up a second win of the Lancashire League season with a surprise success at Enfield, who started the day in joint third.

An upset looked unlikely when Liam Bedford (33) and Lewis Wright (34) put on 68 for Enfield’s first wicket.

However, Tod pro Michael Neser took four for 36 and skipper Andrew Sutcliffe three catches to limit them to 164 for nine.

Opener Simon Newbitt hit form in Tod’s reply, anchoring the visitors to success with an unbeaten 64 from 122 balls, hitting seven fours and a six.

He and Ben Sutcliffe (24) put on 74 before Elliot Gilford (1) and Ben Pearson (3) also departed. But Neser crashed an unbeaten 54 from 41 balls to clinch a seven-wicket success.

Lightcliffe are eighth in the top section of the Bradford League after picking up their third win of the season, by 11 runs at home to surprise strugglers Pudsey Congs.

Overseas man Suleman Khan was in fine form again for the Wakefield Road side, making a brisk 58 after Josh Wheatley (39) and skipper Jonathan Wilson (34) had steadied the ship following the early losses of Alex Stead and Rhys Jowett.

Lightcliffe were dismissed for 183 in the last of their 50 overs and Khan then set to work with the ball, following up his half-century with five for 32.

Fellow spinner Chris Greenwood (three for 45) polished off the visitors for a narrow success.

Brighouse also bounced back from a disappointing display on Bank Holiday Monday. They won by five wickets at home to Bankfoot in Division Two.

They took full advantage of bowling first, Johannes Van Ee (four for 16) and Zafar Jadoon (three for 23) dismissing their visitors for 75.

Brighouse lost quick wickets after an opening stand of 43 between Zahir Hussain (13) and Zafar Jadoon (23) but Fakhar Hussain (18 no) and Van Ee (12 no) saw Brighouse to victory.

Speedster Wasim Qasim took six for 57 but was unable to stop Elland sliding to a 44-run home defeat by Hoylandswaine in the Huddersfield League.

Qasim and Jack Hendy (two for 46) reduced the visitors to 85 for five but the Hullen Edge side’s change bowlers were expensive as the visitors rallied to 211 for eight.

Young Aussie Dan Arms made 41 at the top of the order when Elland replied and Greg Finn a patient 56 but the rest struggled and the home side finished on 167 for nine.

Also in the Premier Division, Barkisland had no answer to Slaithwaite’s left arm Aussie paceman Nathan Freitag.

He dismissed the top seven home batsmen as Barkisland were dismissed for 99 in reply to the next-to-bottom side’s 152 for nine.

Alex Scholefield and Darren Robinson took three wickets each for Barkisland but Abdul Wahid’s 61 proved valuable for the visitors.
