Mick Hustler’s side went into the final day of the season with a slender two point advantage over persistent chasers Booth.

On a day when the groundsmen at several clubs deserved plenty of plaudits for getting matches started, Lane ensured they remained out of their rivals’ reach with maximum points in a seven wicket home win over Sowerby Bridge.

The game was reduced to 40 overs per side and Sowerby Bridge posted 164 all out with James Dixon caught on the boundary from the final ball of the innings.

The reliable Tim Helliwell made 61 for the visitors but Simon Collins’ five for 47 left Lane feeling confident.

Half-centuries from Andrew Pinfield and the unbeaten Raqeeb Younas had Lane firmly on course and a boundary from Chris Shannon off the final ball of the penultimate over sparked the celebrations.

Booth duly beat Warley by overhauling their opponents’ 213 for six with skipper Rob Laycock going past 1000 runs for the season, but it was not enough.

Hustler received the trophy from league chairman Anthony Briggs.

They will now be gunning to match Mytholmroyd, who hold the record of four consecutive title wins between 1942 to 1945.

At the other end of the table the required Queensbury miracle nearly occurred.

At Old Guy Road the players did their part by rolling over Triangle for 89, with Amjad Ali taking seven for 54. ‘Bury went on to win by eight wickets and gain maximum points.

However, Blackley picked up three points at SBCI to save their skins.

The Division One programme was completed last week and yesterday’s game between the two promoted teams in Division Two, Great Horton PC and Old Crossleyans, were washed out.

Simon Ainley clearly had an evening engagement as the Outlane number five blasted a quick fire 55 not out to ensure victory for his team and clinch third place above hosts Clayton.

The only remaining question among the first teams was who finished in the bottom two places along with Greetland.

The answer was Denholme Clough, who were rained off against Upper Hopton, who finished two points above them in the final table.

Meanwhile, Warley followed up their Crossley Shield triumph by completing the double and retaining the second teams’ title.
