The course set up by Harriers stalwart Simon Anderton, included checkpoints as far apart as Stoodley Pike and also a few past Bacup.

This proved a challenge to all and no one managed to get every checkpoint on a cold, crisp day.

Local orienteering specialist James Logue got to all the checkpoints bar one, but arrived back at race HQ three minutes over his allotted three hours.

The six-point penalty meant he came second, just one point behind Simon Bourne of Calder Valley.

Valley had the first five runners in Heptonstall’s ultra-marathon specialist Bourne, Logue, Bill Johnson, Jonathan Emberton and Phil Scarf.

Scarf’s wife Jackie was the first lady.

The coveted Todmorden ‘O’ Trophy, went to Ben Crowther, despite also arriving back late.

He was closely followed by Darren Tweed and Rob Gray, who were both only seven points behind.

The first Todmorden lady was Chris Preston and first team was husband and wife Jon and Bev Wright.

There were junior competitors as well, Sophie Taylor and Rueben Skinner.

They had both teamed up with their dads and showed great stamina and map reading skills to get to four checkpoints each, leaving them ahead of some of the more experienced competitors.

They received a prize in recognition of their efforts.

The last prize of the day was the Golden Pigeon for last place. This was a close call and when Roger Howarth arrived back more than an hour late he looked certain to take the prize.

However, a quick recount revealed he had narrowly missed out to Richard Blakeley and Maria Prescott, who had been more than 40 minutes late.

Anderton thanked the entrants, Masons Arms staff and Keith Parkinson for his assistance with scoring and results.

Todmorden Harriers has pack runs on a Wednesday evening at 7pm, this month from the Bramsche Bar in the town. There are groups to suit all abilities and fitnesslevels. See for further details.
