Austerity policies have worked

Thanks to the Conservatives and George Osborne, Britain will be the best performing major economy in the developed world this year, and will grow at nearly twice the pace of the US.

The International Monetary Fund now expects output in the UK to rise by 3.2 per cent in 2014 leaving rival economies trailing behind. Ministers said Britain is now in the fast lane of recovery following the deepest slump in post war history. George Osborne’s austerity policies are working with gross domestic product forecast up at 2.9 per cent, the largest for any country. Getting public finances in order has raised business confidence and restored growth to the economy creating jobs.

In contrast, it is just nine months before the General Election, and Labour has no positive, clear message for anyone about the economy and why they should vote for them.

In Calderdale, the number of people out of work and claiming Job Seekers Allowance has halved since 2010 with more jobs created. All is not ideal as some employers pay less than the minimum wage, and only offer zero hour contracts. This is not acceptable as hard working families want security with a home and mortgage they can afford and to know their job is secure to make payments.

On top of this they want skills to be able to work, care when they become old and frail, and public services designed around the needs of people and places. The City Deal between West Yorkshire Councils and the Government is a plan which includes £50 millon investment in the Calder Valley line giving rail improvements, and extra parking at stations to give better access to travel by train.
