We’re national fell hosts

Calder High School will be hosting the English Schools National Fell Running Championships.

The event starts and finishes at school on the September 28.  This will be a double first as the event has never been held in Yorkshire or been hosted by a comprehensive school.

We would like to continue the ‘buzz’ that was created throughout Yorkshire with the Tour de France and celebrate our links with Calder Valley Running Team, who have helped to organise this event. We are anticipating over 500 young competitors from across the country will attend.

There are 4 races in total, an under 12 (Year 7), under 14 (Year 8/9), under 16 (Year 10/11) and a senior race (Year 12/13). The start/finish is on the school front field, heading up Midgely Road towards Heights Road and the fells behind.

There are prizes for the winners of each race and each competitor receives a memento t-shirt.  The 6th form canteen will also be open and would love as many students as possible to be involved take in the event.

We would also appreciate any help with marshalling and volunteering from parents as possible.

l After school clubs at Calder High have been more popular than ever before. Football training on Monday evenings has had a regular 60 young players from Year 7 to 10. Y12 and 13 BTEC sport students have been a fantastic help so far helping with the coaching and refereeing duties.

Netball has also been popular on Monday afternoons with over 50 girls from years 7 and 8 training in preparation for first fixtures on September 25. Year 9, 10 and 11 netball begin on September 23.
