Much-travelled violinist Martyn Jackson returns to Calderdale on Sunday, January 20, to play in front of a home crowd who have keenly followed his career.

Martyn, 24, returned to the upper Calder Valley to spend Christmas with his family in Heptonstall.

And later this month he will make his annual pilgrimage to Square Chapel, Halifax (7.30pm), where he can expect a warm reception.

Martyn first played at the arts venue about a decade ago and has established himself as a firm favourite. As a talented solo artist and chamber musician, he has played both nationally and internationally, including being invited to perform with principals from the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

Legendary Polish violinist Ida Haendel praised Martyn, saying he was “one of the most exceptionally gifted violinists I have ever encountered”.

His violin and piano recital will include Schubert’s Sonatina in A Minor, and Sonata in E flat major (Strauss).

Martyn now lives in London after studying in Berlin for two years. He has already been booked for more than 30 concerts in 2014.

He said: “I have played quite a few times at Square Chapel and have played concertos with the Orchestra of Square Chapel.

“I feel at home there and I am fortunate to have a lot of supporters in the area who come regularly to my concerts. It’s nice to see friendly faces.”

There’s an exclusive question-and-answer session with Martyn during the evening for those who are signed up as Friends of Square Chapel. For tickets (£11, and £9 concessions in advance, £12 and £10 on the day) call the box office on 01422 349422.
