Calderdale councillors have voted against independent recommendations to increase their allowances.

The issue was discussed at a full council meeting at Halifax Town Hall last week and the feeling against the rise was overwhelming.

Coun Adam Wilkinson (Lab, Sowerby Bridge) said: “It’s a difficult issue and I accept it is an independent report but I don’t think now is the right time to be considering our own allowances as there are families struggling in Calderdale.”

Also on the agenda was a £500,000 contribution towards funding for people with dementia.

The proposed scheme would provide housing for 46 adults with dementia and provide a range of personalised care services.
