A HEBDEN Bridge lesbian couple Anne Tierney and Lorraine Cameron made history when they formed Calderdale's first civil partnership.
The tied the legal knot at Calderdale District Register Office, Halifax, which opened early especially for the occasion last Wednesday.
As soon as they heard about the change in legislation, the couple decided to be the first in Calderdale to take the step.
A school improvement officer at Kirklees Council, Anne, 44 said: This change in the law is a huge step for us.
"We've been together for nine years and now that has been legally recognised."
Lorraine, 40, associated director at Bradford Teaching Hospitals said: "We're delighted. We wanted our service to take place on this historic day - and it's a day we'll never forget."
They chose a simple ceremony, signing the register in front of two friends and exchanging vows of commitment.
The couple also had a Champagne breakfast followed by a celebration with friends at the Mooch cafe in Hebden Bridge.
