Calder High: Students train for anti-bullying role

Last week, some students at Calder High School took part in a morning training session around anti-bullying.

The students from year eight, nine and ten have undergone an application and interview process to be successful in gaining the post of an anti-bullying ambassador.

The role of an ambassador is to support the school’s anti-bullying policy, be someone students can approach and work alongside staff andstudents to provide a safe school for everyone. They should also help raise awareness of bullying and promote the school’s a zero tolerance towards bullying.

After their training ambassadors took part in a question and answer session with year six students from Burnley Road Academy.

The ambassadors discussed their ideas and explained how they will implement them in school. The year six pupils were reassured to know that there are systems in place should any issues arise.

The students are all very excited about their new role and are looking forward to putting their ideas into motion. The team have decided they will be introducing themselves to the school through assemblies and hope to encourage all students to speak out about bullying.

An Inspector Calls theatre visit enjoyed by all

A group of 50 year ten students and staff went to see An Inspector Calls at The Alhambra Theatre, Bradford.

The students were collected from school and reached the theatre with time to spare. Students waited in the seating area of the dress circle quietly socialising and chatting. They had excellent seats in the theatre, with fine views of the actors and stage.

The pupils thought it was an excellent performance. The set was unique – a large London house which opened out to create a stage within a stage. Characters were clearly portrayed and, as well as the original script of JB Priestly, this version contained additional lines detailing themes and characters.

The whole performance was clever, professional and utterly captivating. Indeed, as the final curtain dropped, students not only applauded enthusiastically but also let forth the odd cheer.

The behaviour of Calder High students was simply superb, reflecting the fact that they had a fabulous time.

Drama pupils wow

A massive congratulations to all the GCSE drama students who performed their final drama exam on April 27 in the Ted Hughes Theatre.

We hope the external examiner was blown away, as we certainly were, by the level of talent displayed.

From adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, to a remake of the famous Bouncer by John Godber the students performed some extremely entertaining pieces.

One piece entitled Freedom? took inspiration from real life crimes, such as the horrific story of the murderer Lizzie Borden.

Dazzling the examiner with physical theatre, naturalism, comedy and many more styles and genres, we hope the GCSE results this summer reflect the excellent skills displayed. Well done year 11 GCSE, we will miss you all.

Year ten drama have been doing a fantastic job so far this term when exploring the text Blood Wedding, by Fredrick Lorca.

The challenging text explores the fraught relationship between the bride and Leonardo. The love-struck pair are forbidden from being together, yet during the bride’s wedding reception, she runs off with her true love, Leonardo.

Year ten students have had the task of demonstrating the tense, passionate and moving relationship, through the use of physical theatre, movement and thought tracking.

Summer school for new year

Calder High School is running its annual summer school from Monday, August 22 to Friday, August 26 for all students who will be joining us in year seven in September.

There is a very exciting programme planned, which can be viewed in the online brochure.

Our programme is designed to interest and inspire students and to help facilitate a smooth transition between primary and secondary school.

Despite the government withdrawing all funding for school to run summer schools, we feel that it is an important experience for students to support their transition to secondary school life and to prepare them for September.

Calder High School has tried to keep costs to a minimum without damaging the quality of provision offered in previous years.

Full details of the cost will be included in a letter which will be posted directly to students’ home addresses.

Calder represented at meeting

Calder High students, Sam Bell and Emily Webster, represented the school on behalf of the student council at Hebden Royd Town Council’s annual meeting held at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. 

The council wanted to know about the young people of Hebden Royd and invited Calder to deliver a presentation along with various youth groups from the area.

It was excellent to see a number of Calder students past and present delivering excellent presentations in front of more than thirty people. Emily and Sam spoke about Calder, our challenges and our aspirations.

It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to have a voice and get involved with some people with influence and collectively express themselves.

Our students spoke about how they want the student council to become more integrated and pro-active by working together to help everyone to get the best out of everyone.
