Overgate Hospice to feature in new Happy Valley series

Overgate Hospice will feature in pivotal scenes in the much-anticipated second series of Happy Valley.

In September last year, the crew spent a day filming at the Elland-based hospice, where staff, volunteers and patients were thrilled to meet the actors and learn more about the filming process.

Ange Walton, clinical services director said; ‘We were thrilled to be able to welcome Sally and her team here at the hospice, not only because it was a source of excitement for the team and our patients but also because it was a great opportunity for us to show what a hospice environment is truly like - warm, friendly and comforting.

“We worked closely with Sally on the scenes set here to ensure they were true to life and it was a great experience for all involved.”

Staff members and volunteers at the hospice were invited to enter their name in to a draw to win the opportunity to be an extra on the show.

One of the lucky few was volunteer Sue Wood who said: “It was such an exciting day and despite their busy schedule the actors made the time to chat to the patients, which was lovely.

“I feel honoured to be involved and cannot wait to see the finished show.”

All efforts were made to ensure that patient care was not adversely affected during the filming, and all staff and patient feedback was extremely positive after the visit.

Chief executive, Janet Cawtheray, said: “We are grateful to have the opportunity to present a truly representative view of hospice care to a national audience, and that the series is due to air so early in the year gives us a great starting point to launch our 35th anniversary celebrations.”

The new series of Happy Valley will air on Tuesday, February 9, at 9pm on BBC1, and Overgate Hospice will appear in the first episode.
