Happy Valley '˜a massive boost for tourism'

That’s the message from Calderdale Council now the second series of the hit police drama is back on our screens.

Katie Kinsella, Calderdale Council’s principal tourism officer, said: “We receive lots of enquiries in our Visitor Information Centres about wanting to explore the area where the programmes like Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax are filmed.

“As a result we are developing a trail to showcase film and TV past and present, these will be available for visitors for the start of our spring tourism season.

“We support lots of filming activity, from high-profile adverts to dramas, and Calderdale Council has signed a ‘Film Friendly Partnership charter’.”

Councillor Steve Sweeney, who is Calderdale Council’s cabinet member for communities, added: “Happy Valley has been a hugely successful drama for the BBC, and it’s certainly got people talking locally and nationally.

“The storyline is very dramatic and often dark, but the spectacular scenery of Calderdale shines through, and provides a real juxtaposition to the intense storyline.

“Raising Calderdale’s profile through filming can have positive impacts on our economy, including potential job creation, local spending by filming companies and a boost in visitor numbers.”
