Great War Treasures on Show at Halifax museum

The Bankfield Museum in Boothtown, Halifax, will launch a series of images, archives and objects in an exhibition commerating the First World War on August 2.

Angela Clare, who is leading the project named ‘For King and Country’, has gathered over 60 stories and collected more than 200 objects since last year.

She said: “I started gathering what information I could from family members, including a selection of photographs and a Christmas card sent from my great-Grandfather to his wife and daughter in 1918.

“I searched the 1911 Census to locate family members and Ancestry revealed which regiments they joined and when.”

The top floor gallery in the museum will be transformed for the next four years following a successful Heritage Lottery Fund bid.

The majority of the exhibition will be based on First World War stories that have been passed down through generations.

Angela said: “It’s touching that families want to share their stories to remember people 100 years on - both those who were sadly killed and those who survived.

“With everyone now gone, these centenary years give us the chance to record what we can now, so that these stories and experiences aren’t lost.”

In addition to the exhibition, talks, tours and events will be held at the museum.
