Fire service to be at Great War event

An expected 500-strong parade will march into Millennium Square, Leeds, this Saturday morning (July 26) and will include the descendants of West Ridings Regiments, veterans from past and recent wars and members of the Royal British Legion.

A city march is then expected to proceed from Millennium Square to Leeds Minster, where a service will take place.

The commemorative event is hosted by the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire Dr Ingrid Roscoe and will be attended by WYFRS’ Deputy Chief Fire Officer Steve Beckley.

DCO Beckley said: “I am honoured to be invited to represent West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service at the West Riding Commemoration of the outbreak of the First World War.

“Whilst this will be a solemn occasion, it is vitally important that we continue to remember the ultimate sacrifice made by so many people and at the same time pay tribute to all those who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces.”

Britain declared war on Germany on August 4, 1914 and the brigade is also planning to mark the centenary later in the year on Remembrance Day.

The Fire Service Band has been invited to play at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing in Ypres, Belgium, on November 11, which players described as a “massive honour” and will be the third time they have played at the poignant venue.
