Importance of bees highlighted after hive of 50,000 rescued from Elland Library

The importance of honeybees to the ecosystem has been highlighted after a hive of 50,000 was recused at Elland Library.

Independent honey supplier Joyce Jones, of Elland, assisted in the removal of a huge honeybee colony from the roof of Elland Library.

After seven hours around 50,000 bees and over 50kg of honey and comb was successfully removed and re-homed on September 12.

Joe WilIerton, who works at Joyce Jones said; " I volunteer and help at Joyce Jones as I’m also a beekeeper, supplying honey locally.

"The council contacted Crest Pest Control, who I assist when it comes to honey bees.

"Myself and my partner removed them."

Spokesman from UK Bee Removers, Clive Stewart said: "All bees are important to the ecosystem, as they pollinate a large proportion of the food that we eat.

"They occasionally come into contact with humans and can cause alarm and distress to those whom are cautious of their behaviour.
