Double donation to hospice

Overgate Hospice in Elland have received a double fundraising boost totalling more then £24,000.

The recent annual Overgate Golf Day took place at Bradley Hall Golf Club and generated £14,000 for the charity, with more than 50 teams competing.

The winning team were from Bradley Hall Golf Club, who were closely followed by a team from The Black Horse.

Fundraising manager Laura Golding said; “The day was great fun and I would like to thank each and every team for coming along to support Overgate.

“I would like to express special thanks to our sponsors Eastwood and Partners and Yorkshire Bank, along with all of our fantastic volunteers on the day.”

The hospice also received a cheque for £10,343 from Craig Johnson, chairman of Ripponden Parish Council until May of this year, the largest sum ever raised during any chairman’s year of office.

Collections and events were held throughout the year, most notably with Craig’s wife and daughter, Geraldine and Caroline, completing the Overgate tandem sky-diving challenge from 15,000ft, which raised more than £2,000.

Craig also organised a collection of essential items in the immediate aftermath of the Boxing Day floods, which were delivered to the Upper Valley.

Craig said: “I’m proud of the efforts of my fellow councillors, and of course my family, for helping me to raise such a huge amount for such a worthy cause.

“I was also extremely humbled by the generous donations the Parish Council received from the Ripponden community for the flood victims.”

Overgate needs to raise £6,800 every day to keep the hospice open.
