Death of former Calderdale head teacher

A FORMER Calderdale head teacher has died.

David Hepworth of Mytholmroyd, was head at Sowerby Bridge High School from 1975 until 1995.

Born in Cleckheaton in 1937, he was a keen sportsman and excelled in rugby and running.

He graduated in History from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

He started his teaching career in Hertfordshire before moving to Yorkshire where he taught at Mexborough Comprehensive School.

Mr Hepworth ran a teacher training department at the University of York and then went on to Thornes House School in Wakefield where he was deputy head teacher.

Moving up to take up the post of head teacher at Sowerby Bridge High School, he took over the transition from grammar school to comprehensive - a system of education he passionately believed in.

Following his retirement in 1995, Mr Hepworth continued to study with the Open University, completing a degree in Science. He also devoted his time to the education of his grandchildren.

He was a family man to the core and leaves his wife, Margaret, his sons, Michael and Philip, daughter Clare, and grandchildren Lauren, James and newly-arrived Maya.

Mr Hepworth’s funeral will take place at St Michael’s Church, Mytholmroyd, at 2.30pm on Thursday, July 3, followed by a committal service at Parkwood Crematorium, Elland, at 3.30pm.
