Daisy elected for Youth Parliament

Year ten student Daisy Sharples beat other candidates from across the Calder Valley after campaigning since January.

This is the first time in recent history, a student from Todmorden High school has represented the Calder Valley both locally and nationally.

Daisy said: “I couldn’t believe that I had secured enough votes to be appointed as the Deputy Member of Youth Parliament for Calderdale.

“I am really happy that I will now be able to put my campaign into action and really make a difference for the young people of Calderdale and to be a voice for Todmorden’s young people, both locally and nationally.”

Daisy’s campaign is focussed around creating a level playing field for all young people no matter of their race, religion, socio-economic background, gender or sexuality. She wants to make sure that all young people have equal opportunities and make changes so that the sports in PE aren’t determined by gender. Daisy also wants to make sure that schools give students the freedom to wear the uniform they choose and for this not to be dictated by gender.

Assistant headteacher Emily Rawlinson said: “The school’s vision is that every student has the potential to become leaders of the future.

“We are very proud of the way in which Daisy has worked independently and proactively to secure this role and we are very excited to see her campaign become a reality.”
