The thieves targeted St Mark’s Church on Leeds Road overnight between last Wednesday and Thursday, August 27 and 28.

But despite their brazen actions, clergy have stayed stoic.

“We do not condone theft, but at the same time we would like to extend grace and love towards the thieves,” said vicar Guy Donegan-Cross.

“God loves everyone, no matter what. They are always welcome at St Mark’s – through the front door!”

Church officials say the thieves left a large hole in the roof when they took the last of the lead to remain on St Mark’s church roof, which was replaced a number of years ago by lead substitute.

Warden David Worthington was quick to spot the damage and immediately contacted a roofing company to patch the roof so that bad weather would not affect the integrity of the building.

Police are now investigating and are appealing for witnesses to get in touch. Anyone with information is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101.
