Sohaib Younis, 27, had been told to stay away from his victim when a restraining order was imposed in October 2019, but last autumn he breached the order when he turned up at her home and tried to get her to resume their relationship.

Bradford Crown Court heard today that after a struggle between them Younis left saying:”If you call the police I will come back and kill you.”

Prosecutor Nadim Bashir said Younis was circulated as “wanted” as part of the police inquiry, but a week later he again got into the complainant’s home while she was in bed.

When she refused to let him get into bed with her Younis, who had previous convictions for violence, became angry and punched her several times in the face.

Younis dragged the woman into the living room by her hair and kicked her in the face before picking up a pair of scissors and stabbing her in the left side of her head.

During the sustained attack Younis became apologetic, but he refused to leave and suddenly lunged at her with a screwdriver causing a cut above her eye.

Mr Bashir said as the violence continued Younis pinned the woman down, put his hand into her mouth and pulled out her two bottom teeth causing “an immense amount of pain”.

At one stage the woman tried to escape through a bathroom window, but Younis saw her and attacked her again this time squeezing her throat.

Younis stayed in the house that night and the next morning acted as if nothing had happened, but when he found out that the police where looking for him he punched the complainant again and hit her over the head with a clock.

Younis, of Harvest Court, Halifax, was arrested three days after the attack and claimed to be “confused” about events because he had stopped taking his psychosis medication and had been using crack cocaine.

He pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful wounding and breaching the restraining order and today Judge Jonathan Rose concluded that Younis met the criteria for an extended sentence to protect the public.

He described the victim’s injuries as extensive and said it was “merely fortuitous” that more serious injuries were not caused.

“I have come to the conclusion you are a dangerous man,” the judge told Younis.

Younis will have to serve two-thirds of the four-year prison term before he is considered for release by the Parole Board.
