Residents young and old celebrated the transition from winter to spring with drums, music and the sharing of food.

Thirty adults and six children attended the “Winter Passage to Light” event at Mytholmroyd Community Centre.

Psychotherapist and community rhythm and dance facilitator Filomena Ianni, who organised the event, said: “Winter Passage to Light community gathering was just what we hoped for, a place where people would feel all equally part of the event, making it happen together, co-operating, sharing food, talents and their own individual creativity and spirit.

“Everyone felt free to go for it each, in our own way. There was drumming where many brought their own instrument to join in; dancing where both children and adults jumped in the middle of the circle together and gave into their spontaneity and joy; sharing food, chatting and milling around, story telling and some magical performance, a surprise glow poi number and lots of laughter. That’s community and that’s sharing, drumming and dancing and creating together.”

The theme for the event was based on the passage from the darkness of winter to the first flickers of the impending spring, still stirring in the ground, and the promise of the return of the brighter light in the coming weeks.

Oxana Poberejnaia, from Todmorden Frame Drum Group, said: “My five-year-old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed Winter Passage community dancing and drumming event organised by Filomena. It was great to see my daughter play different percussion instruments and dance in the company of other children. It was great for me to have an opportunity to celebrate Imbolc, to play frame drums in a circle and to dance in a supportive atmosphere. The idea of celebrating seasons as community is great, and the execution of the idea was good.”

Filomena said she hopes to hold similar events in the future. For more information about future events, visit
