School life: Meet Todmorden High’s debate club

Meet our very own, student led, debate club at Todmorden High School. I spoke to Cara, who is chairwoman of the club;

“I’m Cara and I’m chair of debate club. Debate club was founded by a Year 11 student but I became chair when he had to revise for GCSE exams and didn’t have enough time to run it. We are based in Miss Scott’s classroom and she assists us with the club, but we run it ourselves mostly. The aim of the club is to teach students how to debate effectively. We cover a wide range of topics including abortion, compulsory voting, school uniform and animal rights. My junior chair is called Amilia and she assists me in the organisation of these meetings. At the moment we have about 12 students in debate club. If you would like to be a part of our club, we meet at 3pm in Room 34 in the English block, and would welcome some new members.”
