Business meeting takes to the stage

Halifax Playhouse opened its doors to Business for Calderdale members for their November meeting.Members were given a short presentation on the history of the listed building and the Halifax thespians, a tour of the building, and watched the rehearsal of the current production Le Grand Return.In addition, author, hospital radio DJ and former football league referee, Trevor Simpson gave an entertaining and enlightening talk on the Halifax music scene of the 1950s and 1960s, and how the dance halls in the town vied with each other to attract such stars as the Kinks, Hermans Hermits, Shirley Bassey, Jerry Lee Lewis and even Michael Jackson with the Jackson 5. Trevor has published two books on the subject with the proceeds going to hospital radio. He has recently published Elvis: The Best of British (The RCA Years 1959-1960).Chair of Business for Calderdale, solicitor Nick Worsnop, said: “Trevor is one of Halifax’s well-known and famous sons. “We knew his talk would be well received, and it was fantastic of him to give his time. “Also, the Playhouse is another of Halifax’s hidden gems. “The Thespians are hoping to encourage more people to visit them, and are looking for sponsorship opportunities, and I hope that people will do so and local businesses will become involved.”The production of Le Grand Return began on Tuesday and runs tonight and tomorrow, November 20 and 21 - tickets can be bought by contacting telephoning 01422 365998.
