Champion music from Crofton

Crofton Silver Band

Theatre Royal Wakefield, April 20. Tickets 01924 211311

Crofton Silver Band is back at the Theatre Royal, following its knock-out concert in 2017 and yet more “champion” contest performances.

Under the leadership of Musical Director, Dean Jones, the Band has re-invented itself to become one of the most entertaining brass ensembles on the Yorkshire music scene, with an astonishing range in its repertoire.

Jazz-funk, swing classics and pop standards sit comfortably alongside traditional marches, brass band favourites and the deeply spiritual when Crofton Silver Band takes the stage.

Their aim is to get your feet tapping and the hair on the back of your neck standing up.

There have been great moments for this West Yorkshire village band in its 142-year history - it began life in December 1873, with the earliest recorded concert taking place at the re-opening of Crofton Parish Church after major restoration work in 1875.

But never has it achieved the consistent string of contest success it has enjoyed since Dean took up the baton.

First places in banding’s third section at the Leicestershire Championship, the Butlin’s Mineworkers Open Contest, the Yorkshire Regional Finals and at the British Brass Band National Finals were followed by a series of podium finishes since being promoted to the second section (or division) and then a stand-out win at the 2017 Leicestershire contest.

Now the band has landed the Yorkshire area second section title to win both promotion to the first section and the honour of representing our county at the National championships.

As well as earning a tremendous reputation for its performances under the microscope of competition, the Band has gained quite a name for the musicality and vitality of its concert programmes.

Crofton’s mission – which is working a treat - is to bring a fresh taste to banding for the 21st century, but with all the best ingredients still in the recipe.
