The Dancehall of Dreams is coming to the Calder Valley in June

Stories from the dance floor, from the people of the Calder Valley will be the inspiration for a new community theatre performance at Mytholmroyd Community Centre this June as part of Hebden Bridge Arts Festival.

Dancehall of Dreams is the first production of a brand new theatre company based in Mytholmroyd, with performers over the age of 60, called Calder Valley Performance Ensemble.

It will be performed at Mytholmroyd Community Centre for three performances: at 7pm on June 27 and 2pm and 7pm on June 28. Tickets are available from the Mytholmroyd Community centre and the Hebden Bridge Arts Festival Box office.

After Mytholmroyd, the show will transfer to The Quarry Theatre at West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Organised by Royd Regeneration, this new performance company is being formed by local writer Joe Standerline and internationally renowned theatre director Alan Lyddiard.

The Ensemble is made up of local people who have reached the age of 60 and who have lots of stories to tell and lots of creativity to share. Stories from the local area will inspire a contemporary theatre piece that will take the form of an afternoon tea dance.

“The rehearsal process in now underway and we are looking for people to be involved as story tellers, performers, dancers, singers and back stage helpers. No experience is required - just a desire to get involved and have some fun. Our doors are open to anyone near, in, around or over the age of 60. There is no charge for participating in this project,” said Joe. “We believe that older peoples’ voices are not heard enough and that they have skills and talents that get forgotten as they reach their 60s and beyond. The ensemble wants to champion the stories and theatre skills of older people because they believe that they will inspire and entertain audiences of all ages.”

The project is a collaboration between The Performance Ensemble, Royd Regeneration, Mytholmroyd Community Centre, St Michael’s Amateur Operatic Society and West Yorkshire Playhouse with funding from Arts Council England and Hebden Royd Town Council and kind assistance from Hair and Beauty World in Mytholmroyd.

Contact Joe Standerline via email at standerline@mac.com or phone 0794 1234 313 for details on how to get involved. Join our Facebook page ‘Calder Valley Performance Ensemble’ for information on rehearsals and performances.
