Newcomer Alan makes his debut at the Rex

There is a relative newcomer at the console for this month's organ concert at the Rex Cinema, Elland, on Sunday April 17.

He is Alan Atherton, who studied classical organ and piano at the London College of Music and is now a teacher of organ and piano in his home town of Wigan.

He enjoys live performances and has played at a variety of clubs in the North West from the age of 14. Now, however, he has turned his talents towards the theatre organ and owns a Conn 652 theatre organ, similar to the Rex’s own 651 model.

He is a keen cyclist and in 1996 came 12th out of 100 riders in a charity bike ride across the river Jordan, covering 500 miles in five days.

Rex proprietor Charles Morris said: “ We are pleased to welcome our first newcomer this year. I am sure Alan will give an excellent concert and I hope there will be a large crowd to greet him.”

The concert begins at 2.30pm. Admission is £5.50.
