Concert bonds arts to the town

Todmorden Mayor Cllr Tony Greenwood, who is returning to the role after 30 years, celebrates the town by hosting a special concert featuring a new piece of music from composer Tim Benjamin.

His ‘String Quartet No.3’ will be premiered atTodmorden Town Hall on June 18 (7.30pm). The concert features the renowned Ligeti Quartet, who will also be playing music by Schnittke, Lutosławski and Barber - including pieces that have been used on films The Elephant Man and Platoon.

There is no charge and the audience will be asked to ‘pay what they feel is appropriate’. All proceeds will go to the Mayor’s charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. Benjamin and members of the Ligeti Quartet will host a ‘masterclass’ for local string section musicians at the Town Hall during the afternoon.

“Tim’s new work is inspired by Todmorden and every time it is played in future the programme will acknowledge that the town’s councillors commissioned it, preserving the link between the arts and the town,” said the mayor.

Said Benjamin: “To have musicians as talented as the the Ligeti Quartet premiere this piece on the same bill as works by Schnittke, Lutosławski and Barber is very special.”
