Oliver Thorpe got his and Copley’s season up and running in fine style yesterday in the Premier Division of the Spenser Wilson Halifax League.

The opener made 133 not out, hitting 15 fours and seven sixes, to set up a 122-run win over visitors Mytholmroyd.

The 2014 Parish Cup final man of the match also picked up a couple of wickets as ‘Royd were dismissed for 130 in reply to Copley’s 252 for three.

It was no one-man show for the hosts with Thorpe’s opening partner Chris Dennison making 34 runs and taking four wickets for 34.

Thorpe hadn’t played the previous week when Copley were perhaps saved by the weather at Booth, having had their opener at Sowerby Bridge washed out.

James Watson spared a few of Blackley’s blushes at home to Warley, even though they lost by 176 runs.

The visitors powered to 253 with South African Graham Kinsey’s 52 the top contribution.

Blackley were 35 for seven in reply before number nine Watson hit 30 to get the home side up to 76. Luke Duckitt (four for 19) and John Currie (three for 30) did most of the damage.

After a good win against Sowerby SP the previous week, Sowerby Bridge were brought down to earth with a bump by another of their neighbours.

SBCI’s Robin Hanson (six for 27) and James Sykes (four for seven) rolled them over for 36 at The Astleys after the top three Bridge batsmen had made ducks.

The home side had earlier laboured to 142 for eight with Chris Dalby (39) and Lewis Firth (26) the top scorers.

Returning pair Chris Greenwood and Adie Gawthrope took three inexpensive wickets each to help Sowerby limit hosts Booth to 143 for nine, Robert Laycock top scoring with 41.

However, Sowerby were all out for 111 with Nigel Horsfall, Moazzam Ayub and Patrick Thomas sharing the wickets.

Triangle, despite losing six wickets, never looked like losing the contest at Grassy Bottom, taking just 32 overs to overcome Thornton’s 218.

Fifties were registered by the visitors’ Ross Carnall (56) and Triangle openers Dan Crosland (78) and Nathan Madden (52).

Champions Jer Lane are setting a scorching pace, following up wins over Mytholmroyd and Warley with a 148-run drubbing of hosts Northowram HT.

Half-centuries from Andrew Pinfield and Wayne Cotton put Lane on top and after they had reached 260, Nasir Chowdrey took five wickets up the hill and Simon Collins dismissed most of the tail with four.

Visiting skipper Mick Hustler ended the match with a catch on the long off boundary but twisted his ankle and was on the ground for some time before limping off.

The best performance of the day in Division One came at Southowram where promoted Oxenhope defeated the hosts by three wickets thanks to Lewis Hopkinson’s 56 not out as the visitors chased down 196.

Queensbury were on the ropes at 66 for six against visiting Stones until Amjad Ali blasted 74 to lift the total to 181. The Ripponden side mustered only 59 in reply, Ali completing a superb day’s work with five for eight.

Jonny Sykes made 100 as Old Crossleyans beat Great Horton Park Chapel by 112 runs while Bridgeholme dismissed nine man Low Moor for 90 and won by eight wickets.

Cullingworth and Luddenden Foot show the way in Division Two after easy wins over Clayton and Upper Hopton respectively.

Isaac Baldwin’s 172 helped Foot pile up 343 for six and win by 213 runs.
