Scholefield boosts Barkisland

All-rounder Alex Scholefield had a fine match as Barkisland notched a useful 16-run home win over Delph and Dobcross in the Huddersfield League’s top flight.

Scholefield hit 82 after Jamie Summerscales (40) and Alex Kaye (56) had helped the Calderdale side recover from the early exit of overseas man Tim Seifert.

Barkisland’s 274 for seven was reduced to 245 by rain but four wickets for Scholefield limited Delph to 229, home skipper Darren Robinson taking the key wicket of ex-Elland player Greg Buckley for 87.

Buckley’s former side were also successful, the Hullen Edge men winning by seven wickets away to Moorlands.

Early wickets for Alistair Finn gave Elland the initiative and they never surrendered it, dismissing the Mirfield side for 179 with Siraj Sajid (four for 20) making late inroads.

Elland faced a slightly reduced target and eventually romped home thanks to a fine stand from Ashton Blakey - son of Yorkshire and England’s Richard - and Sajid. They both hit unbeaten half-centuries.

It was a disappointing day for Calderdale pair Lightcliffe and Brighouse in the Bradford League.

Lightcliffe, who will be at home to either Bankfoot or holders Pudsey Congs in the Priestley Cup semi-finals on July 12, slipped to ninth in Division One after a 97-run defeat at Woodlands.

The Wakefield Road side’s bowlers suffered at the hands of ex-York CC left-hander Duncan Snell, who hit a run-a-ball 144 to power his side to 268 for five.

The visitors hopes of a fightback were dashed when they slumped to 88 for six but Rob Burton hit out defiantly, with six maximums in his 70, to lift the total to a more respectable 171.

The totals were remarkably similar at Scholes where the home side beat Brighgouse by 96 runs in a new derby fixture following the home side’s switch from the Central Yorkshire League.

Scholes, who are second in Division Two, made 266 for five with the help of 116 from opener Kasir Maroof, who added 136 for the second wicket with overseas man Atif Zaidi (61) after ex-Copley player Toby Thorpe had departed for nine.

Several players got a start in Brighouse’s reply but Mo Khurshid’s 30 was the top contribution as they were dismissed for 170, spinner Danny Cross taking five for 55.

Walsden stayed top of the Central Lancashire League with a surprisingly easy seven-wicket home win over Heywood.

The visitors’ high-profile top three, including Kiwi international Robert Nicol, were soon back in the pavilion and it needed a knock of 80 from skipper Danny Pawson and 30 from ‘keeper Dale Latham to get the visitors up to 154.

Sri Lanka Umesh Karunaratne dismissed both Heywood top scorers on the way to four for 23.

Poor weather left Walsden needing 137 and the home side reached their target in the 27th over.

Jake Hooson (38) and overseas amateur Shubham Harkel (23) gave them a solid start and stand-in skipper Nick Barker (36 no) helped complete the task.

Northowram Fields are fourth in the Central Yorkshire League’s Championship after a 33-run defeat at Wakefield St Michaels.

Zafar Khan maintained his fine form with five wickets as the home side made 184 and the Rams slumped to 41 for four before Jon Lister’s 35 on his first team comeback after injury helped them to 151.
