A forecast for snow at mid-day on Sunday didn’t stop 26 intrepid Mount Skip golfers from taking to the fairways in the club’s winter league.
The weather was fine but extremely cold for the 9am shotgun start and first out of the hat was Yorkshire Ladies player Neeve Fisher against veteran Des Senior. The latter won 5 and 4 but Senior praised Neeve’s quality ball striking.
Ash Hewitt, third in the table, partnered Captain John Sutcliffe and they won 3 and 1 against improving Mick Robertson and Paul Elliot.
Rob Dutson and Michael Turner were soundly beaten 6 and 4 by Chris Hoyle and Martin ‘Smiley’ Whiley. The latter was the real star of the show, hitting the last six greens in regulation.
The leader at the start of play, Steve Scholes, was drawn to play with Keith Law and they appeared to have a formidable task to beat Charles Bamford and Noel Russell. This turned out to be the case with ‘Big Chas’ playing brilliantly in a 3 and 2 win.
It was not all doom and gloom for Steve who sunk a wonder putt on the third to earn himself a nice little cash pot on the birdie hole.
Martyn Astin doesn’t lose too many matches but he and Lee Amos were thumped 7 and 5 by Darren ‘Cowboy’ Clithero and Andy Hutchinson. Indeed Clithero only dropped one shot.
It was a bad day for the Scholes family as young Sam and his partner Nigel Fielden lost 3 and 2 against Dave Pickles and in-form Matthew Richards.
Gav Brumby, in second place, and Jonny Cockroft won 3 and 1 against Gavin Degnan and Matthew Fisher and that enabled Brumby to hit top spot.
