Wadsworth hit 10 to get in the groove for date with Red Star
Wadsworth United are in rude health ahead of Saturday’s derby trip to Hebden Royd Red Star after a 10-1 spanking of Volunteer Arms last Saturday.
United were rampant in their first home game since mid-October in the Halifax AFL’s first division.
The referee turned up almost half an hour late and then dismissed an Arms defender for dissent after 10 minutes.
Top scorer Jonathon Gibson notched a quick double, beating the offside trap and finishing calmly in a one-on-one with the ‘keeper and then cashing in on good work from Zac Greenwood and Max Crossley down the left.
Wadsworth were dominating possession and Adam Brown cut in from the left and rolled the ball through the ‘keeper’s legs for 3-0.
Home custodian Joel Greenwood’s pin point long ball enabled Gibson to complete his hat-trick and Crossley scored the goal of the game, beating three defenders, cutting in from the right wing and hammering home a left footed shot from the edge of the area in to the roof of the goal.
It was 6-0 at half time after Gibson unselfishly played in Crossley for his second but mid-table Volunteer got a goal back five minutes after the restart.
Normal service was resumed in spite of the heroics of the Volunteer Arms ‘keeper who denied Kieron Sim, Brown and captain Frank Howell.
Crossley soon completed his hat-trick after some great footwork from Craig English; Gibson’s beautiful cross field ball to the back post enabled Zac Greenwood to drill home; sub Brendan Barclay shocked everyone by scoring with a wonderful diving header; and Gibson rounded off a great attacking display with his 13th of the season.
Midgley United Reserves were convincing 4-0 home winners over their Hebden Royd Red Star counterparts in a Calder Valley derby in Division Two.
Andy Bottomley paved the way for James Balmforth to slide the ball past the keeper for the opener.
Balmforth missed a penalty but made amends five minutes later when good work from Matthew Thompson left him with a tap-in.
Bottomley scored from close range and Adam Garlick sealed a convincing win for Nick Farrar’s Midgley side by lobbing the keeper from 30 yards.
