Valley aces rewarded for efforts

A 20-strong party from Calder Valley Fell Runners made the trip to the Moorside Grange Hotel, Stockport on Saturday to celebrate successes in the England and British Fell Running Championships.

The club’s men attracted plenty of attention by dressing in red skinny jeans, white shirts, red and white ties and white trainers - colours of the club’s vests.

Star perfomers to receive their awards were Sally Newman and Holly Page.

Newman was the top veteran 50 runner over the series of six English Championship races, with the best four results to count.

Page, from Blackshaw Head, won the under 23 crown and was also second in the ladies’ section.

Karl Gray collected bronze in the veteran 40 section and helped the men to silver in that category and bronze in the open section.

Calder also did well in the British Championship events, which are usually not quite as competitive as their English Championship equivalents.

The titles are decided over four races which take place in Wales, Northern Ireland, Scotland and England.

Valley’s Helen Fines was second to Todmorden Harriers’ Lauren Jeska in the ladies’ section.

Karl Gray was third among the veteran 40 men, helping the team to silver in that age category and third overall.
