Scholefield's six in derby

Barkisland justified favouritism in yesterday's Huddersfield League top section derby but were given a scare by visitors Elland before emerging two wickets winners.

Skipper Robin Broom again led the way for the Hullen Edge men with 45 in an Elland total of 178, Mark Hinchliffe (23), Alastair Finn (25) and Aussie Josh Dallimore (24 no) adding runs down the order.

Seamer Alex Scholefield did much of the damage with six for 62 for Barkisland.

Opener Alex Kaye (60) and Zimbabwean Gary Chirimuuta (36) put the hosts in a decent position but Finn and Hinchliffe took three wickets each and Broom two before the home side scrambled past the winning post thanks to Jake Finch (20) and Matthew Steers (15 no).

Lightcliffe beat Bradford League leaders Hanging Heaton in a remarkable high-scoring contest at Wakefield Road yesterday.

The visitors dominated the first half of a 643-run contest, openers Gary Fellows and Nick Connolly both hitting 113 and adding 216.

Ex-Illingworth and Yorkshire player Fellows struck 13 fours and four sixes while Connolly had 11 fours and four sixes.

Hanging Heaton closed on 320 for six but Lightcliffe were unfazed by the size of the task and a second-wicket stand of 127 between Ian Philliskirk (76), playing against his former club, and Alex Stead (58) set them on their way.

Overseas ace Suleman Khan then hit an unbeaten 121 from just 89 balls, hitting eight sixes, and he found a willing partner in Rhys Jowett (43), who helped add 106 for the fourth wicket.

Khan saw Lightcliffe home with four balls to spare, giving his side a second league win of the season and inflicting a first defeat on Hanging Heaton, who lost top spot to Pudsey St Lawrence.

Brighouse are next to bottom of Championship B after losing by 81 runs away to Carlton, one of the former Central Yorkshire League sides in the division.

Home opener Chris Wynd (106) figured in two century stands as Carlton made 296 for eight.

Asad Mahmood (38), Srinidhi Kumar (36), Wajid Hussain (34) and Zafar Jadoon (30) ball got a start for the visitors but were unable to push on and Brigshouse were dismissed for 215 with their former skipper Will Smith taking four for 50.

Northowram Fields put a poor batting performance against early leaders Buttershaw behind them with a 49-run win away to Oulton.

Robert Smith, a signing from Scholes earlier in the week, marked his debut with 50 and he and Ben Grech (51) helped the visitors to 134 for one before the visitors’ change bowlers made inroads and restricted them to 204.

That proved enough, though, as Oulton lost their last seven wickets for the addition of only 18 runs to be all out for 155 in the 47th over, Zafar Khan (four for 50) and Josh Bennett Keer (three for 26) doing most of the damage.

Matthew Smith maintained his good form for Illingworth in the Aire/Wharfe League’s middle section.

He hit an unbeaten 74 to see the Halifax side past visitors Adel’s 218 for eight.

Opener Harry Bliss batted throughout for Adel with 112 not out but Illingworth won by four wickets.
