Midgley make most of game in hand
MIDGLEY United made the most of their game in hand as they took over at the top of the Halifax AFL Premier Division with a comprehensive 3-0 success at Greetland.
Conditions were far from ideal but Midgley adapted well and were excellent value for the three points.
However, they had to overcome a mini crisis befrore kick off with regular keeper Steven Butterworth uunavailbale as his wife was due to give birth while second choice Jordan Juma was drafted in despite suffering from food poisoning.
Nevertheless, Midgley were still able to keep their second clean sheet in three games as the defence remained solid and restricted the home side to very few clear cut chances.
Midgley opened the scoring after 15 minutes with Tom Booth heading in a cross from the dangerous George Bamford.
Midgley continued to create chances but were unable to add to their tally before the break.
The second half saw them have the better of the brisk wind and they made it count with a dominant display.
Greg Spink doubled their advantage after latching onto a loose ball and letting fly from 20 yards after which Booth hit the woodwork and Bamford failed to make the most of a couple of decent opportunities.
He made amends however when his pace again caused problems in the Greetland defence and he was upended in the box and Andrew Butterworth slotted home from the spot.
Boss Craig Gee was delighted at seeing his side overtake the inactive Stump Cros at the top, adding: “We have built steadily on a good start to the season.
“We have also produced some good consistency and just as importantly we have kept two clean sheets in three tough games against decent sides.”
- Calder 76 Reserves continue to set the pace in Division Three following a 4-2 success at Brighouse Sports.
Marc Walters put Calder ahead only for Brighouse to level and then take the lead after the break.
Walters struck again to restore parity and the points were sealed when Steven Jones netted the fourth and Danny Mitchell rounded things off.
Calder will face a tough examination of their promotion credentials this weekend when they travel to take on a Shelf FC side who are second and inflicted an 8-0 away defeat on Volunteer Arms Reserves last time out.
