Keith lays down the law at soggy Mount Skip
ON a bitterly cold and windy morning only 17 of Mount Skip’s hardiest golfers turned out to play in the Winter League on the last Sunday before Christmas.
The decision to play was made at the last minute following the heavy rain which had closed the course on Saturday.
Winter greens were used, which is always unpopular, and the course was only just playable with the normal greens still having standing water.
Darren Clithero beat Club Captain Martyn Astin by five up in the two ball.
Leader Jonny Cockroft was drawn in the three ball with Andy Hutchinson and Keith Law. Law came out on top after a brilliant back nine, blowing his two opponents away.
In spite of the loss, Cockroft still has a three point lead at the top of the winter league table.
Cockroft also won the money for the birdie hole on the ninth and repeated the fete on the 18th.
Brian Coukham and Paul Deglan lost to Steve Scholes and Chad Allott.
Scholes’ win puts him back in the top 16 and level with his son Sam, who lost his game partnering Ash Hewitt against second place Gary Earl and his partner Chad Allott.
Noel Russell, who was second, dropped a place after going down two and one with his partner Dave Fisher against occasional winter leaguers Lee Amos and Neil Bond.
Lee and Neil ‘bonded’ well, dropping few shots after being two down after the first two holes.
Skip’s Tuesday club is moving to Thursday for the next two weeks. Anyone wanting to play should meet at the club at noon.
