Heady days for Hollins as Acton are put to the sword
Hollins Holme made it six wins out of seven in Division One of the Bridge Balti Halifax Sunday League after their comprehensive 8-2 success at an Acton Athletic side who had started the day on top of the table.
Holme’s greater height told as they scored two goals from headers following corners on the way to opening up a 4-1 interval lead.
Ben Clayton had headed Holme in front from an excellent Andrew Butterworth cross before Greg Spink laid his corner kicks on a plate for Andrew Smith and Joe Gibson.
Chris Garbutt prodded home at the far post to make it 4-0 before Phil Gomes pulled one back for the home side just before the break.
Holme had the best possible start to the second period when Clayton added his second, and he looked good for a hat-trick only for a defender to steer his goalbound shot into his own net for 6-1.
James Chadwick netted twice before Acton sub Ryan Carrey lobbed ‘keeper Steve Butterworth to complete the scoring.
Holme had the luxury of giving their substitutes a run out including Booth cricketers Rob and Richard Laycock who were making their debuts for the club.
Holme face a big test on Sunday when they travel to play Premier leaders Carrington in the Halifax FA Sunday Cup.
Stubbing Wharf paid the price for a woeful first half away to North Bridge FC in Division Two, losing 4-3 to rivals who joined them on nine points.
Visiting man of the match Aaron Glover drew first blood for Wharf but North Bridge scored three times before half time and added a fourth on 75 minutes.
It could have been worse, player-boss Kris Archer saving a penalty.
Wharf had switched from a 3-4-3 formation to 4-4-2 and they improved but late goals from Andy Lacey (penalty) and Kieran Bannister were not enough to pull the game out of the fire.
Wharf are away to one of the three teams below them, Beehive and Crosskeys, on Sunday.
Royd Club, who lost by 4-3 at home to Elland Sports Reserves last Sunday, prop up the first division.
They face a crunch match at home to fellow strugglers Queens Head at Brierley Playing Fields on Sunday.
In Division Two, Hebden Bridge maintained their bright start to the season with a 2-1 home win over King Cross Park.
Although still only sixth in the table, they appear to have bright prospects of another three points against North Bridge FC at White Lee Rec, Mytholmroyd this weekend.
