Hatty makes a bit of club history
Hebden Bridge ABC fighters Hatty Nyland and George Standring had mixed luck in two very close fights.
The 24-year-old Nyland, from Todmorden, was the first female to fight for the club and she gained a majority decision against fellow debutant Paige Webb of host club Grimsby Boxing Academy last Friday.
The 57kg pair stood toe to toe for the three two minute rounds and gave everything, the crowd showing their appreciation for both fighters.
Standring, from Luddenden village, faced fellow 12-year-old John Johnson in the Yorkshire final at Havercroft Sports Centre, Wakefield last Sunday.
Traveller Johnson took an unbeaten record into the fight, which was in the 48-50kg section, but Bridge’s Clayton Varey thought his man had done enough to put a blot on it.
However, Johnson got the verdict by one point, fighting back after Standring had taken the opening round.
Bridge’s Oliver Wilson, another 12-year-old and fighting at 50-52kg, has a national semi-final at Havercroft on Sunday, February 17.
