Contrasting wins at weekend for Scorpions

Hebden Bridge Saints Scorpions under 11s started their weekend with a 14-2 romp against Beacon Rangers but faced much stiffer opposition in Todmorden Sports Centre the following day, still running out 5-3 winners.

Tod adapted better to heavy conditions and quickly took the lead. Joshua Knight equalised from the penalty spot, but Sports Centre looked the better team at this stage and took a 3-1 interval lead.

The second half saw a dramatic turnaround. On the restart, Lucas Newsome reduced the arrears from another penalty. Soon afterwards a beautifully flighted corner kick from Dan Bradshaw was headed home by Jake Blackhurst to make the score 3-3.

The momentum was with Scorpions and they took the lead with a typical Thomas Robinson strike. Knight had been the driving force behind the revival, and as Scorpions surged forward it was fitting that he finished a strong run with an individualist goal.

Hebden Bridge Saints under 14s’ losing run was extended to four matches and again they went down by a single goal, this time by 5-4 away to Crossley Swifts.

Tigers twice established two goal leads in a dominant first half performance.

Martin Howard opened the scoring, soon followed by a well taken goal from Alasdair Pedley. Then in an eventful last few minutes of the first half both teams scored twice as Crossley Swifts equalised only for Howard and Pedley to each get their second goals.

Tactical changes unbalanced Tigers and in a more even second half it was Crossleys who took their chances. After a well worked third goal and an unstoppable free kick for the fourth they grabbed the winner with a long distance effort which just crept under the bar.

Tigers pushed for their fifth but were twice denied by Swifts keeper late on.

Todmorden Borough continue their good run with a 9-1 win over visitors St Columbus.

Borough’s defence was not really challenged in the first half as their side surged into a 4-0 lead.

Saints never gave up and got one back, lobbing the keeper when they were 5-0 down.

Scorers for Borough were Matthew Wright, Callum Issitt, Jacob Godsman-Pilling, Jamie Hall, Tristan Pilling and Jordan Glover.
