Chess derby in store

Hebden Bridge B travelled to play Todmorden C on Monday hoping to continue their impressive run of form in the second division of the Calderdale League.

The result, a 3.5 to 1.5 win for the Hebden side was good enough, but represents their worst result this season.

Dave Sugden lost for the first time and it was only captain Martin Syrett’s second draw.

Individual results: C. Edwards 0, D. Shapland 1; G. Bowker 0, A. Leatherbarrow 1; P. Logan 0, J. Blinkhorn 1; T. Webster 1, D. Sugden 0; B. Pratt ½, M. Syrett ½.

On the previous Monday, in a weather-affected match, Hebden Bridge D lost 2.5 to 0.5 to Hebden Bridge C.

The game on board one between the captains almost led to an upset, with John Kerrane blundering his queen in a comfortable position against Dan Crampton, and having to struggle hard to recover a draw.

The match also featured the successful return of Peter Heppleston to the club’s teams after working away.

Individual results (D team first): D. Crampton ½, J. Kerrane ½; C. Greaves 0, S. Priest 1; D. Leggett 0, P. Heppleston 1.
